A friends mother is trying to find a book series she read in the 90's. She doesn't recall the author or character names. This is what she remembers:

Rich woman, father dies. Finds out he has lost the family's money. All he taught her was to shoot. She becomes a hired assassin. Because of her social standing she gets into all the right parties and no one suspects her because she's a woman. She only kills people she thinks deserves it, like pedophiles.

Thank you very much if can help!

I haven’t read this book myself but my coworker described it to me and it sounds fascinating. However, he can’t remember the title or author. All he can tell me is that it is about an alternate reality in which the Pilgrims assimilated to Native American culture when they landed in North America, instead of the other way around. The book is set in the modern day and shows what the country would be like now had this happened. I know it’s pretty vague but that’s all he can give me and I’d really like to find it and read it! Thanks!

Read a book in 2002 when I was in the 6th grade about this little girl who was electrocuted by a wall socket and developed telekinesis and telepathy. I remember her abilities were tested as a child and specifically those cards where she had to guess what was on the other side that the person was looking at. It then goes to modern day and she's helping battered woman by using her abilities. One husband I think tries to murder his wife and the lady saves her.

I read this book when I was in elementary school in the US in California. I think it was required reading.
It was about two siblings sold/given by their parents to slavers, sec trafficking, etc. Not sure if it was a sister and brother or two sisters. Possibly set in Vietnam or other early 1900s run down country. Was told from older siblings point of view.
I can't remember really solid details about it so hopefully someone knows it. Thanks!

There's this book I read a few years ago. It's about a fat kid who was 12-13? And he was being bullied in school and he met a vampire who appeared to be a girl and around his age. Turns out the vampire was a boy and his name was Elias or something like that. He had a 'parental' figure in his life who killed little kids for the boy and he was a pedophile I think. Certain scenes I remember is when the fat kid stole some chocolates from a store, when he met elias in a playground and when they were communicating in Morse code. PLease heeelp I want to read it again, it was an amazing book.

A few (or two) weeks ago I was watching the news on PBS (Public Broadcasting System in the US). Jeffrey Brown was interviewing ... someone. During the interview he mentioned that the guy had written a book about things getting better for humanity. That we've been getting less violent, from our early known history till now.

I wasn't paying enough attention to get more than that. But, I'd like to take a look at the book.

I went to the PBS news site today and couldn't find anything.

I'm hoping someone else saw the interview/news story and remembers more than I. Or that someone can recognize the book from my sketchy memory of it.

PS. It doesn't seem to be in the piece the called, "This artist is taking on America's history of violence" with Carrie Mae Weems.

FOUND by Rydra_Wong. It's "The Better Angels of Our Nature", by Steven Pinker.

Help me, please!

I read this book in the mid-early 2000's and cannot remember the title or author. I remember that it was about a teenager who moves and lives in a little bungalow/shack over the water and there is a surfer who sleeps on her roof because he is homeless. They are pretty close in age. They befriend each other and later they realize that he is her long-lost brother who was kidnapped when they were young. It mentions a red ball from their childhood, which is one of his only childhood memories. This girl also dates a super wealthy boy from across the pier and one of her friends struggles with anorexia.

I know that all makes no sense, which is why I can't find it.

Help me figure this out PLEASE!

I originally posted this question on the [livejournal.com profile] whatwasthatbook community, but, assuming this is a carry over of that com, it doesn't look like any of the original posts were imported here, so I'll re-post it here. I'm not certain I ever got an answer there.

A long time ago there was this picture book I read as a kid that for some reason remains stuck in my head. It's about an older sister who has to deal with who I think is her newborn sister and her worn out parents. There's a side-story about her desire to become a grown up and wanting a pair of shoes from the shoe store she can't quite fit into yet because her feet are too small and she hasn't had a growth spurt.

Hi all,

I'm looking for an ebook I read many years back (~2009-2011) about a tycoon/billionaire/successful type-A man whose fiance/wife has gone missing (I think she left him or ran away for reasons I can't remember). He's looking for her but finds her lookalike half-sister (not twin) instead and I don't think he believes her at first when she's trying to tell him that she's not his fiance/wife.

He takes her for revenge and sees there's chemistry and passion between them. The wrong woman (the half-sister) is innocent and a contrast to her sister, who only got together with the male protagonist for money. We find out the other woman would stay with the half-sister whilst she was getting abortions, but there was no children between the couple. The male protagonist eventually believes the woman is the half-sister and reveals he first saw the half-sister first and fell in love/lust but got together with the other woman because he thought they were the same person. The male protagonist and half-sister get together in the end.

I remember a part of the book where the protagonists go to a party together where people mistake the woman for her half-sister, and maybe it's here the two sisters have a confrontation.

Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I read this sometime in the 90s
The primary setting is a huge city far off in the future, the only one on that planet, I think:
protagonist is a young man, a space pilot (involving some kind of hyperjumping with expanded awareness to see all the possibilities) I think he was finishing up his pilot education at the beginning of the story.
Father is famous, mother stole DNA (I think she scratched him) and used the skin material to impregnate herself.
Girlfriend who is an anthropologist or something, goes undercover in a primitive tribe to gather samples and the like, uses body sculpting to fit in with the different (but still human-like) and larger built tribe members, him and his father joins her for some reason their relationship is fairly antagonistic though.
She starts sleeping around with the male tribe members to get those samples, he becomes jealous and starts also sleeping around. Father and son fight at one point, the protagonist is afraid they might kill each other since they are a lot stronger than their normal bodies.
While flying, he crashes on planet and is in grievous condition he is healed by someone, he gets back, starts slowly evolving (transhumanism) as a consequence of the healing, can manage some superhuman feats, moved very quickly at one point out of need, perceived as slowing down time, I think it was to save somebody.
He sees clearer, understands the inherent 'programming' in people around him that rules their behavior,
even those walking around with the "burnt of (self)mastery" are not completely free.

That's what I remember, I have no idea about the chronology unfortunately.

Hi everyone,

so I read this book few years ago and can't remember the author or title. It's plot was about a teen author who wrote a really popular novel series and her books got made in to a movie or tv show. This girl writes her book under a false name and add a photo she found from internet as the picture of the author. And when the movie crew decides to film the novel in her village so that she could oversee it, she pays someone else to pretend like her and she as an assistant.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Edit: I remembered something else. One of the character's(author or decoy, i cant remember exactly) name was veronica

• the main character hunted dragons from the past that are committing crimes?
• there was 1 dragon who was pure white who liked keeping things and his hoard clean
• dragons has human and dragon forms
• it takes place in the modern day
• each dragon has a specific weakness

Hi everyone. I read a book back in high school that was really interesting but for the life of my I can only remember a few details, so I’m hoping someone can help me out.

One of the details is that the main character had an old leg injury from a car crash he was in that killed his father. It’s later implied that the car crash was his fathers suicide.

The other detail is that he goes on these morning jogs with his girlfriend and at one point says something along the lines of, “I was always trying to keep up to her and she was always trying to stay one step ahead.

The way I remember it is that it was a mystery book but that’s it.

Hello, I registered on this site because I've scoured the internet for hours in search of a book that I know exists but has no traces. It is science fiction. It starts out on a spaceship, the female main characters father is from Earth or a planet and he came to the space tribe ship and had a daughter with one of the women of the ship. People that live on space ships are pale white from generations of living without sun, but the main character due to her father has tanner skin. Per tradition another space tribe ship comes and everyone believes she will be married to the son of the other captain. So she gets close with this son and they end up making love in the ships lake or something and are caught. It turns out she was meant for the other ships captain even though he has many wives. I think they end up deciding to kill her and the other ships captain is angry and they leave and he intends to punish or kill his son. Likewise the captain of her ship I think decided to kill her, they bring her to a room and try to suffocate her to death or something by draining the air, but during the time she figures out how to breath some liquid or something some fish or something live in that has oxygen of some kind. Eventually she survives and somehow gets off the ship and I don't really know what happens between, but she ends up on a trash island on Earth and gets taken in and helped by a mother and daughter, they bond over time and eventually a storm destroys the island and the mother dies, but in a small ship the main character saves the girl and they get away. I think they make it to another planet at some point and they somehow find the main characters grandmother, and she takes them both in. They go to school and the younger girl learns and adapts very quickly but the girl from the ship fails badly and gets in with the wrong sort/ so says her grandmother or something. Then I don't remember much, but she leaves and I remember the ending to the first or second book she runs into someone from her or the other captains sons ship and she says things are different, and things are more fair for women on the ship now. (I probably got many details wrong, but I'm going mad, I know this book/series exists, but I can't find a trace of it on any book site or on the internet itself.)

So I am looking for a book that was similar to a Where's Wally thing. It was a woman (possibly an eccentric aunt) who was traveling the world. Every page was a really busy scene of a different country and you had to look for the gift she was trying to get for each family member (ex: find blue mittens for uncle __). There were scenes like the floating market in Bangkok, a scene where they're at a resort where everyone has white mud on their face because it is good for your skin, etc. In an airport too. Any help would be highly recommended!

It's driving me crazy I can't think of this series! I'm pretty sure it's a 90s series though maybe very early 2000. It was a series I think 5 or 6 books in total, but could have been more. Pretty sure I bought them from Scholastics.

Anyways, what I can remember of this series, is various children of varying ages. I know, not very helpful.

I do remember one of them was with a girl and her horse.

This is not a lot to go on, I know, and I apologize, but will be forever grateful if there's an answer!

So I’m trying to remember this book that I read probably around 1999.

A group of siblings (I want to say 2 boys and 1 girl) are in this weird big place - like school or a weird relatives? And while poking around they find a ring that they joke is a magical wishing ring. And it does grant wishes! Because it turns out that it’s a ring that is whatever you think it is. A wish that was granted was, during a play the kids are putting on, the girl wishes that the “audience” of scarecrows they made were a real audience - and the scarecrows all being applauding her acting and having movement.

The ring also turns someone invisible, and turns someone into stone (while hiding inside a stone elephant or something?), and a whole host of other shenanigans.

The copy I read was a chapter book but also had some illustrations through it - I remember vividly a picture of the kids and a female friend searching for the ring which was missing in the girls room.

Edit: it appears to be “The Enchanted Castle” by Edith Nesbit

The book I'm looking for is something I read maybe 8 or so years ago. I believe that the book was an adult novel as it was something I got from my mother's bookshelf and had it a pretty "heavy" sex scene in it as I recall, so I don't believe it was something I got from school, being about 13 at the time.

What I can remember from the plot:
A single man gets custody of his teenage son after the boy's mother dies. If I recall correctly this is either the first time they're meeting or the first time in a long while. The boy doesn't know his father at all and thinks him odd, mostly because of his allergy to the sun. Strange things are going on around town like people going missing and being murdered and I suppose there are some Satanic aspects to these incidents because it's rumored around town that it's a vampire devil person or whatnot. The boy believes that his father is responsible and is a vampire, due to the sun allergy and being slightly odd. I can't remember if his father had done anything specific to make his son think he's a vampire or a killer. I believe the boy is just angry, sad, and dislikes his father a great deal for being absent. Anyway, the father teams up with a woman (love interest) and I believe that they are looking into some of the things going on around town. I don't remember anything about the woman or why the two of them are investigating together or at all, but I do remember he's spending time with this woman. The boy meets a girl and I don't remember much about her except that she wears different colored tights or something like that and gives the boy half of her sandwich when they meet. It turns out that the killings and whatnot have been done by a group of "satanic gothy" type teens who are being manipulated by a man. Now, I can't recall if this man who is doing the manipulating is an actual vampire or just a creep. I do remember that the group of teens kidnap the girl that the boy had become friends with because she's a virgin and they're going to sacrifice her or something and the evil man is going to drink her blood. The boy is injured, I believe it's his ankle that gets broken, and he's being held hostage and during this time I believe he sees his dead mother's ghost or something and talks to her.

That's all I can recall about the book, sorry if it's a bit long winded but I wanted to include as much as I could remember. Hope someone can help (:
