A Zoomer friend of mine was wondering how old this trope was, and I found myself recalling the following comics story, probably from a 1960’s issue of Creepy or Eerie; the writer was almost certainly Archie Goodwin, and the artist may have been Steve Ditko.

As I remember it, a foolhardy wizard manages to broach all the security measures surrounding the ultra-classified This-Is-Not-A-Place-Of-Honor containment chamber for a forbidden spell that he believes will neutralize his rivals’ powers. Turns out that he’s right—because the spell causes magic, period, to self-destruct. Fleeing the Wizards’ Council HQ, he consoles himself with the thought that his rivals are at least powerless against him—except that the populace have gotten wind of the fact that the healing, blessing, and fertility magic is gone (and who’s to blame), and torches and pitchforks still work just fine.

Hullo All.

I woke up this morning puzzled by a notion I'd had of a comic I saw on the scans-daily community ages ago. Only thing is I can't recall the title or the characters' names. I was wondering if anyone might know of it and could help me out?

hello,

been trying for years to remember this series I read when I was younger, but I can't remember the title, author or cover.

all I remember about it is random pieces of the plot + smaller details.

- normal, teenage girl (believe she's blonde, could be wrong) is dating her best friend.

- new boy moves to town, believe his name is close to either malachai/malakai, and is later found out to be some demon kind of create (or at least can summon them through a portal he opens up near the end of the book)

- people start to wind up dead and are found in this forest like area in the town

- girl develops magic and at some point (idk if its the first book or later in the series) accidentally zaps her lipstick and melts it in the school bathroom

- crows or ravens pop up a lot, which is later found out to be connected to demons

I believe either shadow or dark/darkness was in the title but I could very well be wrong. I also read this pre 2010 and know there is at least 3 books in the series. Please help :(

Hi everyone, I've forgotten a book i read a long time ago. I read it in Canada in english. It was a romance and fantasy novel that included a girl named Mage and her boyfriend named Adam. Mage had magical abilities. I believe the book was also a trilogy.

A few scenes I remember are:
A scene where she got angry and used her magic to roll a tire.

A scene where she wanted to have sex with him in a hotel but he wanted to wait for a better place to do it

(SPOILERS)
Near the end of the book Adam dies. (I dont really remember whether this happened in it or not but i think she was able to see Adam as a ghost after he died).

If anyone can remember the title that would be so helpful. Thanks!

I'm attempting to track down a novel I picked up at my local library growing up. I don't live anywhere near it now so I can't go and look, and I only read the first few chapters...but here goes.

The cover, which admittedly was the main reason for me to pick the book up, depicted a hunter with a bow overlooking a forested valley. The artwork was really beautiful. It did a good job of fooling me.

The contents of the book were, and this is no exaggeration, an almost 1 to 1 copy of Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. Farm kids, pale riders, the whole shebang. The one thing I remember being different was the Moraine character was a guy, and the Lan character was a girl. Everything else was just short of being word for word.

I know this is basically nothing to go on, but I often find myself wondering if the author was trying to be clever and later on subverted the reader's expectations.

I'm really glad I found this community, I read a looot of books, so hopefully I can contribute in answering questions as well as getting help!

Speaking of which, I just remembered a YA fantasy novel I read around 2008. It has (at least) two main characters, a boy and a girl, whose perspectives are switched between. The girl is a dragon/fairy creature locked away in a tower and has been since she was little, and the person who locks her in stole her wings - ripped/cut them right off her back, I remember them describing the wounds. I think the captor claims she saved the girl from being murdered. The captor wears the wings as a cape, and either uses them to fly or is trying to figure out how to use them to fly. Near the end of the book the girl breaks out of her room and finds her wings up on the wall, at which point her magic calls to them and they reattach. She flies away and meets the boy who was racing to the tower on horseback.

That's as much as I can remember! One or two details might be slightly wrong, but I distinctly remember the scene where her wings flew to her and reattached to the scarred nubs on her back.

Any help appreciated!

Hi everyone, I am wondering about a book-series (at least what I remember being a series) I read in the mid-2000s.

From what I can remember, the book was centred around two children/teenagers. One of them a boy, the other a girl. They might have been related, as well. Somehow, they arrange some magic stones that open a portal into a different world where magic is present. It becomes apparent that there are several different worlds that they can travel to through these rocks, each rock having signs that symbolize what world they visit might consist most of (like rocks with ice, water and snow will send them into a very cold and chilly world). They meet a wizard (I'm pretty sure), who belongs to an order. He turns out to be not that nice. The girl has strong magic abilities, she also finds out that her father might belong to one of these worlds and she becomes desperate to find him. I think the wizard hatches a basilisk, who is very intelligent, and who begins to turn everyone in the village to stone. The boy, if I am not remembering wrong, has the ability to shapeshift. I am pretty sure he is able to turn into a wolf.

I cannot for the life of me find out what this series is called, please help me! I would love to revisit them.

I read this book I think around 2014 but definitely within the range of 2010 to 2015. I think this book was part of a series, but I only read the first one if that is the case. It was definitely fantasy, and I would guess that it is young adult. It was about a boy and a girl, either cousins or brother and sister, who were both high school age. The boy was slightly younger than the girl and he was much more serious. The girl was more of a typical teenager, and I think a bit of a rebel. I don't remember how but somehow the boy and the girl get transported to another world - possibly this is caused by the father? This new world exists outside of time, in a way. It's populated by all kinds of ancient civilizations who have been living there for a long time, basically not aging. The civilizations include Neanderthals, Aztecs, possibly Vikings or Amazons, and a few others. They also are all able to communicate with each other, which is due to the magical properties of these crystals that are plentiful in this realm. The color of the crystals corresponds to its abilities. One color of crystal acts as a translator. Another color is a source of energy. Another color causes them to live forever. Another color acts as a protective barrier. One thing I DISTINCTLY remember happening is when the boy and the girl end up there they are taken to the leader, who questions either their cell phones or their flashlights. At this point the boy attempts to explain science to the people, but the translator crystal keeps translating the word "science" as "magic". The boy tries a couple of times and then finally is able to say "science", but that has no meaning to the crystal people.

I don't remember exactly what happens next, but I know that the girl joins a tribe of female warriors - likely either Amazons or Vikings. The boy befriends several teenagers of different civilizations, including a Neanderthal boy. I remember that there is a clear class system in the crystal realm, and that the Neanderthals are basically treated as idiot servants. But **SPOILER** they are actually extremely intelligent and faking their stupidity out of paranoia. **END SPOILER**

I don't remember much of the overarching plot but I think there might have been some evil scheme and unrest brewing between civilizations. Also possibly crystals going missing?

Anyway, that's all of the information I can remember. Does anyone know what book I mean? Thank you so much!

**Edit**
This book has now been found, thanks to the much appreciated efforts of the glorious and lovely kaylee66!!!

The title is Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow.

Can’t find this book and it’s driving me insane. Believe I read it about 5 years ago in a library. What I remember is it’s a teenage boy maybe on holiday by the sea Andrew it switches between being narrated by him and a girl who lives there. He meets her at the beach and her distinguishing feature is the fact she smokes cigarettes and wears bright red lipstick. The girls unhappy with her life and convinced him to run away and somewhere along the way they join a circus. I think after time the boy gets jealous because she falls in love with one of the performers. There’s a conflict and all I remember is at the end they have to perform a magical/superstisous ceremony in a dark room with mirrors??? To release someone?? It’s driving me mad!

I read the first one of this series between 2008 and 2009. The parts that I remember about it was that the main character was a virgin and somehow her being a virgin gave her abilities of some sort. early in the book she got drunk and had a one night stand, also there was a horse that ate a human in order to get three wishes one of which was the ability to digest meat so he wouldn't die, the other was the ability to breathe fire and the third was to be giant.

Im not quite sure if im mixing up two different books together, but i remember this one scene, where an older lady (an elite) is pretending to be good but is in fact evil, she puts these bracelets on the mc girl which forces the girl to do exactly as she is told against her will. As a demonstration of this power she forces the girl to lick the feet/sandal of her son(s?). Otherwise she leaves the girl to work with her servants.
Im fairly certain the girl is friends with a dragon, a young one who cannot fly very far or cannot carry her far.
I think she met the evil lady in a secluded or secret area where she was being taught magic before she was enslaved.
I believe the girl is part of a prophecy including the dragon friend.
Unfortunately this is all I can remember due to how i remember questioning the slavery part in what im sure was otherwise a children's book. (just seemed a bit more explicit than i was expecting)

I can't remember too much detail except that magic was involved and it was centered around children, at least 3. One of the antagonist was a man who got caught up in the magic (he may have been trying to steal or exploit) and ended up getting the face of a rat which he later attempted to correct using plastic surgery. However, this is all i can remember, which is unhelpful i know.. :(

So I’m trying to remember this book that I read probably around 1999.

A group of siblings (I want to say 2 boys and 1 girl) are in this weird big place - like school or a weird relatives? And while poking around they find a ring that they joke is a magical wishing ring. And it does grant wishes! Because it turns out that it’s a ring that is whatever you think it is. A wish that was granted was, during a play the kids are putting on, the girl wishes that the “audience” of scarecrows they made were a real audience - and the scarecrows all being applauding her acting and having movement.

The ring also turns someone invisible, and turns someone into stone (while hiding inside a stone elephant or something?), and a whole host of other shenanigans.

The copy I read was a chapter book but also had some illustrations through it - I remember vividly a picture of the kids and a female friend searching for the ring which was missing in the girls room.

Edit: it appears to be “The Enchanted Castle” by Edith Nesbit

Although I read this book in my elementary school, I believe its demographic was that of teenagers. The details that I am about to list are very vague and I apologize for that but its been 7 years since I read this book and my memory of subject is very hazy.

The genre as listed in the subject is Fantasy
I read it around 2011, but the publish date was most likely well before then

details that are still lingering in my memory are that i believe it was about 3-5 teens or young adults on a "quest" in search of magical "artifacts" or items. I don't remember if these items had any sentimental value of the characters or played a part in the history of the characters. With searching for magic items, enemies are usually in pursuit and this is no different, for the duration of their journey they are followed by not so friendly people and attacked by pirates when on a bout at some point in the story.

At least one character was a male and 1 female, the other characters i am unsure.

At the time of me reading the story, it was a hard back book.

Thick chapter book from what I can remember.

Rectangular shape

the cover, if i'm not mistaken had circles on the front of it with the gems or magical items they were looking for.

Four gems possibly red, blue, green, and yellow or some other final color.

I apologize again for providing very little detail and quite vague details of the ones provided. I have been stuck searching for this book for a long time so if anyone can help find this book I would really appreciate it. Thanks to anyone willing to help.
