ibskibI read this sometime in the 90s
The primary setting is a huge city far off in the future, the only one on that planet, I think:
protagonist is a young man, a space pilot (involving some kind of hyperjumping with expanded awareness to see all the possibilities) I think he was finishing up his pilot education at the beginning of the story.
Father is famous, mother stole DNA (I think she scratched him) and used the skin material to impregnate herself.
Girlfriend who is an anthropologist or something, goes undercover in a primitive tribe to gather samples and the like, uses body sculpting to fit in with the different (but still human-like) and larger built tribe members, him and his father joins her for some reason their relationship is fairly antagonistic though.
She starts sleeping around with the male tribe members to get those samples, he becomes jealous and starts also sleeping around. Father and son fight at one point, the protagonist is afraid they might kill each other since they are a lot stronger than their normal bodies.
While flying, he crashes on planet and is in grievous condition he is healed by someone, he gets back, starts slowly evolving (transhumanism) as a consequence of the healing, can manage some superhuman feats, moved very quickly at one point out of need, perceived as slowing down time, I think it was to save somebody.
He sees clearer, understands the inherent 'programming' in people around him that rules their behavior,
even those walking around with the "burnt of (self)mastery" are not completely free.
That's what I remember, I have no idea about the chronology unfortunately.
