I read this book in the late 80s. A spaceship lands on planet to explore and a finds a town. There are also small children that are feral that sneak in to get food. One child gets on spaceship when it takes off and they spend time teaching him to trust them and live in their culture. Turns out he is really smart, smart, fast, and string compared to the humans on spaceship. He ends up going to learn to be a pilot and an officer in their military. The child, now grown, goes back to his home planet to capture more feral children and to teach them to be a part of this culture and become pilots. They end up building a settlement on this planet and creating a community made up of these feral children that are now grown and having children of their own.

I read this sometime in the 90s
The primary setting is a huge city far off in the future, the only one on that planet, I think:
protagonist is a young man, a space pilot (involving some kind of hyperjumping with expanded awareness to see all the possibilities) I think he was finishing up his pilot education at the beginning of the story.
Father is famous, mother stole DNA (I think she scratched him) and used the skin material to impregnate herself.
Girlfriend who is an anthropologist or something, goes undercover in a primitive tribe to gather samples and the like, uses body sculpting to fit in with the different (but still human-like) and larger built tribe members, him and his father joins her for some reason their relationship is fairly antagonistic though.
She starts sleeping around with the male tribe members to get those samples, he becomes jealous and starts also sleeping around. Father and son fight at one point, the protagonist is afraid they might kill each other since they are a lot stronger than their normal bodies.
While flying, he crashes on planet and is in grievous condition he is healed by someone, he gets back, starts slowly evolving (transhumanism) as a consequence of the healing, can manage some superhuman feats, moved very quickly at one point out of need, perceived as slowing down time, I think it was to save somebody.
He sees clearer, understands the inherent 'programming' in people around him that rules their behavior,
even those walking around with the "burnt of (self)mastery" are not completely free.

That's what I remember, I have no idea about the chronology unfortunately.

Hello, I registered on this site because I've scoured the internet for hours in search of a book that I know exists but has no traces. It is science fiction. It starts out on a spaceship, the female main characters father is from Earth or a planet and he came to the space tribe ship and had a daughter with one of the women of the ship. People that live on space ships are pale white from generations of living without sun, but the main character due to her father has tanner skin. Per tradition another space tribe ship comes and everyone believes she will be married to the son of the other captain. So she gets close with this son and they end up making love in the ships lake or something and are caught. It turns out she was meant for the other ships captain even though he has many wives. I think they end up deciding to kill her and the other ships captain is angry and they leave and he intends to punish or kill his son. Likewise the captain of her ship I think decided to kill her, they bring her to a room and try to suffocate her to death or something by draining the air, but during the time she figures out how to breath some liquid or something some fish or something live in that has oxygen of some kind. Eventually she survives and somehow gets off the ship and I don't really know what happens between, but she ends up on a trash island on Earth and gets taken in and helped by a mother and daughter, they bond over time and eventually a storm destroys the island and the mother dies, but in a small ship the main character saves the girl and they get away. I think they make it to another planet at some point and they somehow find the main characters grandmother, and she takes them both in. They go to school and the younger girl learns and adapts very quickly but the girl from the ship fails badly and gets in with the wrong sort/ so says her grandmother or something. Then I don't remember much, but she leaves and I remember the ending to the first or second book she runs into someone from her or the other captains sons ship and she says things are different, and things are more fair for women on the ship now. (I probably got many details wrong, but I'm going mad, I know this book/series exists, but I can't find a trace of it on any book site or on the internet itself.)

I'm looking for help with the name of a book I read in the late 80's. The main characters were a brother and sister that discovered the often used "this could change everything" thing. Gene mods were a large part of the book as many characters were adapted to life in space... The brother had three arms but I dont recall the sisters.

I do recall that the brother played guitar. There was one point where he was playing a jam session and the lead singer was ripping up his throat trying to sing "half cord" or "off cord". That's about all I recall and I know its not much but any help will be appreciated. It's driving me crazy that I cant recall the name.
