I'm looking for a series that I read back in the early 2000's that I found in a Friends of the Library sale so I don't know how old the actual series is or when it was published. But, I know two books were published with the author using a pseudonym for the second. A third book was meant to be printed, but I was never able to find it.

It's set in a fantasy world. The series revolves around a woman who has some degree of control over fire. She is meant to find other people like her who can control other elements. The first book revolves around her and her back story. She is a bastard child of a well-off (possibly royal) father. IDK how but she eventually ends up being taken in to live with her father, his wife, and his children. The main character (MC) becomes close with her half-brother. Her stepmother sees the MC as a threat of sorts and constantly belittles her. MC eventually ends up falling in love with her half-brother. They consummate said love, which ends with him dying as a result of "spontaneous" combustion.

MC discovers that she is living through her fifth and last reincarnation. Each previous life her mission was to find other humans who can control various elements and defeat a great evil. In two of the four lives she has managed to defeat said evil and the other two she's failed. She discovers that this great evil has come to "possess" her stepmother. Some sort of other voice shows MC a "what-if" situation in which her stepmother slowly accepts MC into her life. Her half-brother and herself don't fall in love and he remains alive. In each life, there isn't just a "great evil," but also a guide of sorts to help MC defeat the great evil. That guide is her half-brother. But, because the stepmother tried to break apart their relationship, the relationship changes from platonic to romantic. It's weird. I know. But that's the first book. MC's stepmother is evil. Half-brother dead and still acts as a guide, though in her head. And she's now looking for a man who control some aspect of "earth."

The 2nd book in the series centers on the original MC finding a man who has the power to bring Spring back to this world.

The 3rd book centers around the "water" representative in the group. I don't know if this was published or not.

It was a fairly thick paperback about 15 years ago. The title had something to do with oceans, maybe? The conceit was that something in the oceans had enough of human mistreatment and was taking revenge.

One of the things I remember, was a couple riding away on a motorcycle from a way of crabs on the beach. They escape, but then it turns out that they died because the crabs were somehow poisoned/allergy causing? There was a little bit where the book listed all the people who died from eating/coming in contact with these crabs.

One of the characters was as woman who was very obsessed with exercising, because it made her feel less depressed. There is a scene where she is running on the deck of the carrier, because there doesn't seem to be a place to excercise in the middle of the ocean.

Found: "The Swarm" by Frank Schatzing.

Not sure why this book popped in my head tonight on my way back home...but it did. I wish the title had, too.

It was a hardcover book that didn't appear too new. The story was told in an interesting shade of third person in that you knew what she was thinking but no one else. I think the husband's name was John. He sent her to his mother upon learning of their child. She tried to be helpful to her mother-in-law but the language barrier was strong.

She worried greatly for their child's future and what the right path would be as she had observed others in similar situations.

I thought the book had the word "Pearl" in the title but then I remembered that the school librarian recommended Pearl S Buck books to me based on my interest in this one. I wish I could remember more.

I'm looking for a book about a half fae half were'. (This book follows a lot of tropes so bear with it please.) She's taken by two men one turning out to be her cousin the other a family friend she learns of her heritage falls for the other shifter and subsequently gets kidnapped. The shifter she falls for is I believe a leopard half breed with different colored eyes. And the way that her cousin proves his case is by shifting in front of her.

Help please! I'm looking for a book I for the life of me cannot remember the name of. I only remember bits and pieces about the plot, but I think the main character was a young girl named Meghan. She was I think middle school aged and she had missed a month (or more) of school from a sickness (something like mono or something...) and she had an embarrassing incident that had to do with underwear in her class. There was also something else with her making friends with mean, popular girls but I honestly can't remember anything else and it's been driving me crazy! I think it was from sometime between the early and mid 2000s, but it was definitely a chapter book meant for young readers because I must have read this when I was either in elementary or early middle school.

I read this years ago. Was a pretty gruesome story. I can't remember much. Let's call the characters A and B. Character A carjacked character B. Character B stole character Ads knife collection. Character A is a serial killer or something and decides he's going to kill character B over the theft. He ends up kidnapping character B and injuring him badly? Any ideas?

A few years ago my grandson was reading a book about a very smart boy who was going to take some mysterious kind of test. When he's near the test center, he meets a girl who has lost her only pencil down a storm drain. I think getting it out is part of the test.

I didn't get any farther into the story, but I'd like to read the rest of it. I think it was closer to a kid's book than a young adult book.

Any ideas?

HI all, new member here.
For a few months now I have had no luck finding a book I read in my younger years, and then I found this place, and I hope you are able to at least point me in the right direction.

The story is based around a woman who has recently lost her sister through suicide,
It involves a deformed individual with the ability to control a person through mind control, including his own brother who he uses to kidnap the main woman in the story.
I don't remember much else other than...
There was a man who was helping her,
He may or may not have been a detective.
She ends up being controlled against her will.

I think the book cover depicted a woman lying in a puddle of broken glass on the pavement/sidewalk.. but not too sure.

If anybody knows the book or title i would be most grateful for it.
Many thanks in advance.

So I read this book last year or the year before and I can't remember the name, author or name of hero. I do remember that the heroines name was either Claire or catherine. The book is a historical romance book and its about this girl that is into some type of botonical cures and the guy is scarred and he has eczema. They meet and she makes him a few bags of oats to help his condition, and some coconut oil as well, and she helps him put it on his neck. I think the girl is supposed to be finding a husband or something like that. He starts to fall in love with her and she likes him too. And he lewaves for America, or at le eat he's going to because he doesn't think she likes him and he doesn't want to get between her and her quest to find a husband. But she goes and stops him before he leaves. I can't remember much else but ifd anyone knows the title or author I would really appreciate it!!

This is a book that I probably read about ten years ago so I'm sorry if this is very rambling. It was mainly a contemporary romance/mystery book about a woman whose father had recently died, but he had left her a house/apartment in New York(?) and she had to move there and find out what happened to her grandmother who had disappeared when the father was younger. The father had planned to move there himself before he died. The grandmother had been a singer and a gangster's girlfriend when she was a young woman.

The male protagonist lived in the same building (I think) and had known the father. He also had an honorary uncle/godfather that had been secretly involved with the grandmother when she was younger. He was also very rich, had a twin brother and a large family and I vaguely remember a party/family event where the twin brother tried to play a prank on the female protagonist where he pretended to be his brother but the female protagonist didn't fall for it.

At one point in the book the now old gangster turned up and tried to claim being the female protagonist's grandfather. Throughout the book there were also flashbacks of the grandmother's life to try to help solve the mystery as to what happened to her.

Thank you for any help, this has been driving me crazy!

I’m searching for a novella/short story I last read in primary school (late 1990s/early 2000s). It was one of a series of short spooky stories by the same publisher - another was about teen vampires, I think there may have been an alien one too.

This book was from the perspective of a teen girl whose best friend has recently died (I think from suicide), and is now haunting her. The friend (I think her name is Fern) taps on the girl’s window and shows her a pendant or necklace, which I think is a fish or fish tail. The girl works out that Fern has left her letters or a journal inside an old tree that they used to hide letters to each in as young children. These tell the story of why Fern died.

Fern became obsessed with a new, young teacher who started at the girl’s school, to the point where she would start predicting the colour of his ties or clothes. I don’t remember if the teacher might have an interest in Fern too, but I think she gets rebuffed. Either as a result of this, or for some other reason, when she sees the teacher get into trouble in the ocean, she doesn’t do anything to help and he drowns. She then kills herself a short time later.

I think this fish or fish tail necklace or pendant also plays a role (maybe given to Fern by the teacher?) and might feature on the book cover art, or be in the title in some way.

I might have a few details slightly off, but if this storyline sounds familiar or you can help identify the series of short scary stories it could be part of, it would be so appreciated!

I read a book some years ago about a woman who is searching for the main spirit of a city. The spirit's name is something like "The Grey Lady" and she has not been seen in a long enough time that people are starting to worry. The book is a mystery novel. (SPOILERS) I remember that the ending reveals that an older lady at the supernatural experiences club the main character attends ends up being the grey lady. The explanation is that a group of businessmen had sacrificed one of the cleaning ladies(?) in order to summon the grey lady and request a wish when the woman dies. However, nothing seems to happen and they end up leaving. It turns out that the cleaning lady wasn't dead yet and the grey lady only appears right before the sacrifice dies. With no one in the room except the woman being sacrificed, the Grey Lady grants her last wish. The woman is unaware the Grey Lady can grant wishes and says something along the lines of "I don't want to die". The Grey Lady can't save her but ends up taking over her life in order to fulfill the dying woman's wish. Somehow, she ends up forgetting that she is the Grey Lady. However, when the main character confronts her after having put it together, she remembers and returns to being the Grey Lady.
This has been driving me nuts all week.

Help!

Ok I don't remember the author or the name of the book (obviously) but the premise of the plot is:

A YA adult novel. It's a particularly hot summer in NYC and the author describes how the trash and the buildings and the people all look like they're melting. Then he meets some girl (I forget how) and the two start a rock band together. While this is happening they begin to discover that there are underground wormy monsters hiding in the subways and making there way onto the above ground area of the city. The only thing that stops them is the voice/music of these kids. The ending (spoiler) is that they basically travel around the country to fight these monsters.

Please and thank you!

I don't remember exact details ,but the female protagonist took a small person with her from one world to her world( might be a pixie). He lives in her house with her always eating her food. One event that occurred was that the main character brought her love interest home with and got freaky. The morning following he gets up early in the nude to cook the main character food she he encounters her roommate the pixie person. The audience discovers the same time the main character does that her roommate can grow to average size and shrink back to tiny size.

I have googled so many things to try and find this book. It's about a young boy I believe and he goes to maybe Scotland to stay with relatives. In the night, he can't sleep and ghosts come to him. Something that might help is that there is a ghost that is only a foot. I believe there is people trying to buy the land and at the end there's something about unicorns and their horns.

This one had to be late 70's early eighties.
Couple out hiking on vacation in another country.
finds a stone that looks to have a cameo type carving on one side.
they take it home and mysterious things start happening, they discover the rock turns into a small whitish dinosaur creature at night. at first it's cute they seem to want to hide and protect it, seems to really take to the wife's mothering, and there ok, till the deaths occur.
the creature retaliates for them..? anyway the soon find out it's best not to upset it.
I believe,The husband makes a decision to attempt to escape the house.
I remember the scene where he makes it to the car,and it steps in front, but he turns on the headlights and it immediately falls to the ground, having transformed back to the stone. foolishly he believes he's in the clear, drives forward, over the stone and the creatures clawed arm comes through the floor getting him. it was so sad because, although she's heard her husband die, the creature comes back into the house and lays it's head in her lap, she rubs it's head, while silently crying because she can't show any fear.
I believe it auto returned to you, and i also believe she wound up keeping a light trained on it 24/7.
the cover had the picture of a white oval stone, with some type of semi-vague carving of a face?
I use to read a lot of physiological horror, so as to have a story to convey to my nieces and nephews when they came to visit back then.
i really loved this one, because it was also compassionate.

I read this book in the late 80s. A spaceship lands on planet to explore and a finds a town. There are also small children that are feral that sneak in to get food. One child gets on spaceship when it takes off and they spend time teaching him to trust them and live in their culture. Turns out he is really smart, smart, fast, and string compared to the humans on spaceship. He ends up going to learn to be a pilot and an officer in their military. The child, now grown, goes back to his home planet to capture more feral children and to teach them to be a part of this culture and become pilots. They end up building a settlement on this planet and creating a community made up of these feral children that are now grown and having children of their own.

Hi,

I am looking for an original historical fantasy M/M book which included cat-like people as a species co existing with humans. One of the central characters was a cat person, who was a soldier I think. There were other cat people in the story, some of whom were kind of villainous.

Another character was a mute orphan boy (name was probably Eli?) who turned out to be a fire-starter mage. The boy's father was revealed later to be a healer, who was supposed to be celibate and thus the boy's birth was a secret. In this world the healers lived in a kind of impenetrable tower and they were all sorta immortal. The tower was taken over by evil forces who tortured the healers.

There were 2 other central characters whom I can't remember at all. As far as I remember, this is a published book.

Really hope someone remembers this story and can help me find it! Thanks in advance!

I read this book in high school (2004-2008) the cover was red. It was about a girl going to art school. It opens with her going to a Halloween party and going home with a guy in a devil mask. Her parents went to Woodstock and still smoke pot. That's all I really remember. Thanks!
