A fancomic where Calvin appeals to his classmates and principal by singing “Bohemian Rhapsody”…abetted by his dad!

I’m familiar with Bill Watterson and Queen, of course; this has been making the rounds of Facebook, Imgur, and Tumblr since autumn 2023, but I’ve been unable to find a version that credits the fanartist who so cleverly fused the two—the lettering alone, including “Bismillah” in the original Arabic and the sudden gigantic red scare text of “BEELZEBUB”, is worthy of Joe Sabino. And the time frame is right: children in Calvin’s generational bracket would know this song as a favorite of their parents.)

(And, should Calvin’s dad actually happen to agree with his son’s grievance about school, you know he’d absolutely pull something like this.)

Hi there!

What a FANTASTIC community! I've read through a good number of posts here and at the previous domain. I actually recognized a long lost book there, too recently. I am hoping someone will recognize one of these two books I read once upon a time.

The first one I read as a teen in the 80s, so probably from 80s or maybe very late 70s. The story involved a teenage girl who was accepted and went away to a sort of super elite boarding school for artistic prodigy types: art/painting, music, also writing I believe? I think she had been selected over her friend who was perhaps even more gifted and that caused some kind of rift. I seem to remember a student at the school with a violin, possibly also someone who painted? The main girl discovered while she was there that she and her fellow students were being used by spirits who were channeling their own talents through so they could make their own creations live again, so to speak. I believe she saw a fellow student in a trance or unconscious and being "used" by the spirit/ghost to create. I think there was a main adult character in charge of the school - I can't remember, but possibly a headmistress. I've explored the usual titles/authors I could find, but even that search was incomplete...

And, unbelievably, in typing this I have suddenly remembered the strange dystopian second book's title that I've tried to remember for 25 years: House of Stairs.

Thank you for considering!

The story is set at a boy's boarding school. The school is not doing well financially, and might be in danger of closing. So, some of the boys come up with the idea of setting a world record for highest tower of soda cans, to get publicity for their school and save it from having to close down.

There is a girl's school across the road, and they are going on a field trip to a city, so a couple of the boys stow away on the school bus to collect soda cans. The girls manage to hide them on the way there, but when they return, the boys try to sneak out the back door of the school bus, which is an emergency door and sets off an alarm, so they have to run for it and leave the big garbage bag of soda cans behind. The girls' teacher demands an explanation, so the girls have no choice but to say they want to beat the record for highest tower of soda cans, and they end up getting the publicity instead of the boys. I don't remember how it ends.

Other details: The principal of the boys' school has a name like Mr Sturgeon or something, and the boys call him The Fish. I think one of the boys also hosts a radio program for his school?

Book is about a little girl who is overly organized and neat. She is a teacher’s pet that is not well-liked by the other students, I think she’s in third grade. She has to sit next to or work on a project with the messy, wild girl in her class. At first they don’t get along but of course they end up becoming friends and helping each other and the neat girl learns to loosen up a bit and gets more friends in the process I think. I think she evens tries being messy herself at some point.

Images/things I remember:
-Book cover shows the neat girl with short hair and an upturned nose sort of look and the messy girl has curled red hair in a ponytail and is holding a binder and giving a crooked little smile.
-Neat girl is meticulous with organizing her binder and school supplies on her desk. When it rains, she is prepared and on top of her stuff. She has a thermos cup. Her bedroom is in the attic and she likes to pretend she is a princess in there.
-Messy girl is late to class and makes a mess from the rain on the neat girl. She brings a newt at some point.

I remembered as a kid the inner neat freak in me loved to read the descriptions of what the neat girl did so I could pretend to be as orderly as her and feel like I had my life together. Haha such a weird memory. I was reading an old, used book recently and the smell of the pages brought me back to this particular book for some reason!

Thanks for the help!

Hi everybody!

So the details I remember are:

Good vs evil in both the real world and parallel world

The setting of the book is an old school but there is also a parallel world (of sorts) where there are dragons, kings and all that stuff so that version is like a medieval fantasy one. You can only go to that parallel world and back on certain times a year. People from the school also have like, soul twins(?) in the parallel world. For example there is a professor in the school who knows these things and mentors laura, his other version in the parallel world is a king and I remember both of them getting hurt or sick if either of them gets hurt or sick. And the protagonist needed to save the professor/king at one point because of this(one of them was poisoned I think?) I think she had to get something like the holy chalice or something like that to heal the guy but I’m not sure

The main character was a girl called Laura (%90 sure) she had telepathy, telekinesis and other abilities like that. She basically helps the professor and other good characters by having secret confrontations with the evil guys in the real world, she also goes to the parallel one to help out with stuff.

I think there are 5 or 6 books in the series and I’m %100 sure the main heroine forgets everything and loses her powers to win against the evil at the end. And then a new student arrives (and it is implied that the new guy has her abilities and he/she will take the protagonist’s place now) and it ends like that

I remember a dragon eating a character in the 4th or 5th book I think?

I also remember that the protagonist has a confrontation with a sfenks(sphynx?) in the parallel world and she escapes by answering her riddle correctly.

I also remember that the evil people try to kill the protagonist and her mom when she’s little, they put some hellhound like dogs on the road when they are in a car and her mother drives the car down a cliff to the sea to not hit them, her mother drowns but an angel or something saves the protagonist

I think she also has a brother who has no powers BUT I’m really not sure about this one

I think I read this book around 7-8 years before? I think it was a new book back then but I’m not sure.

This is about all I remember from the books. If anyone can help me out I’d really appreciate it, thanks in advance everybody!
