I've asked everyone and I'm starting to feel like I imagined this book. It would have been written about the 80's. It's a children's book about a creature that hatches from and egg and looks like a floppy dragon. I think his name was thing but I'm not sure about that. I loved the book but now no-one else remembers it existed!
Help!!

Could it have been by Helen Cresswell?

Cyrus the Unsinkable Sea Serpent by Bill Peet? Looks sort of like a floppy dragon.

I think Jeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher is too obvious, but I'll include it, just in case. It's a chapter book with lots of pictures, and it was written in the eighties, and the dragon is floppy when he first emerges from the egg that Jeremy takes such good care of...

Was it a Stephen Cosgrove book? From the Serendipity series from the 80s. I swear I can picture the little green monster/dragon (with flopsy ears) and I think it was part of that set.

Dragolin by Stephen Cosgrove about a little dragon that can't breathe fire, until learning self confidence. I'm quite sure it's the one you're looking for, I have a vivid mental image of a page that matches your description. If I can find a copy, I'll post a pic.
