All I remember about this fantasy book (magic and fae involved I am sure) is that the female main character had a traumatic childhood where she was locked in the house when everyone died (I don't remember why everyone died just that they did). I believe this next part is still the same book - later she meets this mysterious fae lord and they become involved and eventually she comes into her own and is very powerful.

I have been trying to remember this book FOREVER!! I think that part of the plot line is that someone was able to get into that house where everyone died (was ripped apart maybe) by sending these little things through a portal, and part of the plot line is figuring out that that is happening elsewhere now. I CANNOT FOR THE LIFE OF ME REMEMBER THIS BOOK AND IT IS RIGHT THERE ON THE EDGE OF MY MEMORY!! Please help!

The trapped-in-a-house thing where everyone dies sounds like part of "Magic's Promise" by Mercedes Lackey. Can't be the same book since it's a boy that gets out of the house, but the plot sounds really similar.

Shoot you're right, I'm totally mixing up two books. I have this visual from the book I'm actually thinking of but it means nothing in context of what the book was about. Just a woman who was found by (maybe promised to?) this fae lord and she is afraid of him at first but it turns out he's not bad and dark like stories say. I think she was actually locked in the house but the open portal thing is totally from lackey's magics promise.

Probably not helpful, since it doesn't fit the rest of the description, but Sandry's Book by Tamora Pierce also starts with a girl locked in a room while everyone else died (of some plague).

I think the woman's name also started with an 'I' but it wasn't Ianthe altho that name makes me think of whatever her name was.

On the other hand, I could just be making shit up!
