Subterranean world/ apprentice

Hello! I'm looking for a book about a young girl adopted? apprenticed? by an older, somewhat cranky man. I can't remember if he was a mage. The most important aspect of the book was her exploration of a rather odd subterranean world. I remember (I think) something about knives, shopping in a marketplace, and maybe a basket. She had a rather bleak existence, with some sort of redemption at the end?

Sounds like an interesting book, I checked it out and read a bit.
Its not it, but you helped me clarify a bit.
"My" book isn't YA. The subterranean component was somewhat empty? She spent a good deal of time exploring it.
I'm left moistly with impressions. Too bad I didn't write its name down.

I haven't been reading the series. I love the author's Chronicles of Elantra series (as Michelle Sagara) and thought I would try these. I liked but didn't love the first one, so never followed up. It seemed like it was really well written, just didn't click for me. If you liked the first one, my guess is it will be consistent throughout.
