Probably not what you're looking for, but it's a fantastic story!

So, the 2 different series I have listed below may not be the series you're looking for, but I really enjoyed them & they closely resemble the details you described. Worst case, they may give you other recommendations that may lead you to the correct series. I love reading & sharing good books so I hope you don't mind I did this!
